Ms. Tanika Kay Owens

Tanika Kay Owens, 19, of Cypress, Texas passed away on January 24, 2011. Visitation: 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 28, 2011 at Singleton & Sons Funeral Home, 627 New Orleans Street, Hempstead, Texas. An additional viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m., until 10:50 a.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Hempstead High School Auditorium, 801 Donoho Street, Hempstead, Texas and the Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 a.m.. Interment will be at the Prairie View Cemetery, Prairie View Texas. Arranged and directed by Gerard Singleton. Tanika Kay Owens was born October 24, 1991 in Katy, Texas, to Charlie E. Owens and Jennifer Kay Austin. She attended both Hempstead and Cypress Fairbanks Independent School Districts. She graduated from Cypress Woods High School in June 2010. She began her pursuit of higher education at Prairie View A & M University in the fall of 2010. Tanika excelled academically throughout her life. She was an honor student in elementary, junior high, and high school. She was a member of National Honor Society, The Beta Club, and Senior Women. In Hempstead Middle School, she played volleyball and basketball in 7th grade .She also received the Gold Medal for her art work at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. At Cypress Woods High School, she was in the Career and Technology Education Program, where she received 1st place in district for Roller Set in 2009, and Best of Show in Skills USA for Salon Design in 2010. She attained her cosmetology license from the State of Texas in 2010. Tanika became a member of New Light Christian Church (North) in 2005 under the leadership of Bishop I.V. Hilliard. Tanika worked for Sodexho Services on the campus of Prairie View A & M University. She was a dedicated Assistant Manager at the Waller Sonic Drive Inn under the management of Ms Vanessa Ruiz, where she was affectionately known as “Lucy Lopez.” There she built many relationships within the community. Preceding her in death one uncle: Cedric Austin, one aunt: Doris Williams Leaving to cherish her loving memory are her parents: Jennifer, Charlie & Tabitha; two sisters, Annitra, & Chelsey; two brothers, Joshua & Drayton. Boyfriend: Dionysus Barnes and Big Brother Malcolm Austin (cousin); grandparents: George & Mary Sue Williams, Mary Esther Barrett and Henry Owens (Rose); nine aunts: Debbie, Patricia, Tina (Rodney), Angela Faye (Braci), Cynthia (Lee), Jackie (Matthew), Betty and Georgette & Angela Huffpower;nine uncles: Caesar, Will (Jackie), Frank (Annette), Fred, Dwight, Floyd (Christine), Charles (Colette), Anthony Owens and Eddie Frances. Two best friends: Marisha Jordan and Noelle Campbell, and a host of loving cousins and friends.
