Mrs. Dirothia Richards - Mathis

May 31, 1924 - June 15, 2012

Dirothia Richards Mathis was born on May 31, 1924 to the late Alfred and Mary Richards in the community of Wyatt Chapel. Dirothia attended Prairie View Training School and upon graduating from high school, she attended Prairie View A&M College for a short time. At an early age, she accepted Christ, as her personal savior and joined the Wyatt Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Later she moved her membership to Mt. Corinth Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. She served in many areas of the church: the senior choir, Ruth Mission Circle and was also president of the Mt. Corinth Mission Auxiliary. Dirothia was united in marriage to Emmit E. Mathis and together they nurtured four children. She was employed at Prairie View A&M University at Henrietta T. Farrell Hall (University Laundry) and after 35 years of dedicated service, she retired in 1991. She was very proud of her family and loved spending time with them. One of her favorite pastimes was making homemade ice cream and homemade sprite cakes. In addition to loving her children, she also loved her dog Chaka, who was like her fifth child. On Friday, June 15, 2012, at 11:29 A.M. Dirothia put on her wings and took on her new heavenly address. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and six brothers. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter Brenda (Willie) of Prairie View, TX, three sons Matthew of Prairie View, TX, Robert (Carolyn) of Houston, TX, Ronnie (Michelle) of Prairie View, TX. Seven grandchildren: Matthew August, Michael August, Evelyn, Kamishilia, Keylawn, Edrick, and Di’Kendra. Ten great grand children: Marlon, Ryan, Jeremiah, Elijah, Joshua, Trinity, Germescia, Desmond, Daionna, and Anthony. One great great grandchild: Mi Kayla and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
