Mrs Hazel L Gilliard

June 11, 1939 - May 9, 2011

Hazel Waites Gilliard was born in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late Albert and Lillian Waites on Jun. 6, 2011. She graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas and attended Texas Southern University. She received her Licensed Vocational Nursing Training from San Jacinto College and certification as a Surgical Room Nurse from Ben Taub Hospital. Hazel was very active before her Heart Attack in 1984. She worked as a Surgical Nurse at Yale Hospital in Houston, Texas for 11 years, Eligibility Specialist for the Family Planning Clinic at Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas for 7 years, Assistant Administrator and Personnel Director at Memorial Hospital, Hempstead, Texas for 5 years, Loan Officer at Waller Bank, Waller, Texas for 5 years, Colorado Valley “Meals on Wheel” Director for 1 ½ years, and City Administrator and Tax Assessor & Collector, Prairie View, Texas for 7 years. She has been a member of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Christian Women In Action and a United Way Board Member. She enjoyed traveling in the states and abroad. She was also an active member of Mount Corinth Missionary Baptist Church. Every morning, she wakes up thanking GOD for her husband, Clifton, who is her heart and soul mate; her two boys, Derrick and Reginald, three grandsons, Ryne, Cameron and Aubrey and granddaughter, Andrea. Hazel is very thankful and grateful to GOD and all of her supporters. She never complains because she says she has GOD to take care of all of the complaints. On January 12, 2006, the first activity was held for the “Special Ladies of PV”, the Red Hat Society Chapter organized by Queen Hazel Gilliard. Hazel feels she is so blessed. She has been appointed “Heart to Heart” Coordinator at her church, which was started by her pastor, Rev. L. H. Crosby. This ministry includes all persons with heart related illnesses. Hazel was preceded in death by both parents, Albert and Lillian Waites, brother Joe Roy Waites and Sister Bernice Dorsey. Hazel is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 44 years, Clifton Gilliard, two sons, Derrick and wife Tramyra Waites of Houston, TX. and Reginald Bo and wife Sherri Gilliard of Prairie View, TX. four grandchildren Ryne Waites, Aubrey Kelly, Cameron Gilliard and Andrea Kelly, Brother Albert Jr.and wife Johnnie Waites of Houston, Tx. Sister Vera Waites of Houston, Texas, special friend Ruth Smith, along with many other family members and friends. Hazel will be remembered for her outgoing personality and generosity, as well as her love and devotion to her family.
