Mr. Dewey Fontenot Jr.

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; Let me know how fleeting my life is.” ~ A psalm of David – the name from which the name Dewey is derived Dewey Fontenot, Jr. was born on February 3, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois to Dewey Sr. and Mary L. Fontenot. He was the second of seven beautiful blessings born to Dewey and Mary. True to the meaning of his name—beloved—Dewey was deeply loved by his mother and greatly admired by his father--his name sake. Dewey grew up in historic Prairie View, Texas, where his parents relocated from Southern University in Baton Rouge after his father accepted a professorship at Prairie View A&M University. From an early age, Dewey displayed remarkable curiosity and brilliance in all subjects. A gifted student, he graduated with highest honors from Waller High School and received scholarship offers from universities across the nation, including the prestigious Purdue University. Driven by a desire to make a difference, Dewey dreamed of becoming a doctor and curing cancer. He began his studies at Purdue University, where he pursued medicine. Later, the University of Southern California recruited him for its law program. Though opportunities took him far, Prairie View remained home in his heart, and he eventually returned to attend Prairie View A&M University, continuing his pursuit of medicine. Dewey was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and later explored entrepreneurship as a restaurant owner. Although Dewey did not become the physician or lawyer he once envisioned, his desire to help others never faded. Throughout his life, he found meaningful ways to support and uplift those around him. Support he gave to Prairie View women’s basketball team, when attending their games to cheer them to victory. Support he gave to his younger brother Fronsoir “Fran” where he faithfully attended every basketball game-home or away. Dewey was the proud father of three shining stars: Keisha, Kerri, and Brandon. Though he may not always have expressed it openly, his love for his children ran deep, and he was immensely proud of them. When his son Brandon played in his high school state championship football game, Dewey watched from the stands with the pride of a father witnessing his son in the Super Bowl. When his daughter Keisha had her first major photo shoot, in his eyes she was nothing short of America’s Next Top Model. And when his daughter Kerri became a beautician, his pride once again knew no bounds. Dewey was known for his love of conversation. Whether discussing politics, sports, or life itself, he could spend hours in thoughtful dialogue with anyone willing to join in. His sharp mind, strong opinions, and warm spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” Psalm 73:26 Dewy, Jr is proceeded in death by his father, Dewey, Sr,(d.2008); sisters, Cottener (d.1964) and Cattena (d.2022). He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters Keisha and Kerri; his son Brandon; grandsons Brayden, and Karson; his loving mother Mary; siblings Mona, Ricky, Fronsoir (Robin), and Florunteno (April); along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
